KRIL Hospital has received a Preliminary EDGE Certification from Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI).
Kiambu Road Investment Limited (KRIL) is a hospital strategically located along Kiambu road in northern Nairobi, Kenya. Developed by AAR, a leading regional medical services provider, the project was developed as a first step to incorporate sustainability into the company’s operations. Through early building simulation modeling with the sustainability consultancy team, KRIL Hospital was able to effectively optimize the performance of the building façade and help pave the way to successfully achieving the numerous sustainability objectives.
This was achieved through the use of state-of-the-art technologies in the design and construction of the building such as an energy-efficient HVAC system, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, water-efficient plumbing fixtures, and a solar photovoltaics system covering 25% of the building’s electricity use.
In addition to achieving EDGE, KRIL hospital will also focus on effective waste management, especially pertaining to the large quantities of medical waste that will arise from the project.

Less Embodied Energy in Materials
Air conditioning with air cooled chiller, energy-saving light bulbs for internal and external spaces (except OT), T5 fluorescent fight for basement, car parking & kitchen spaces, occupancy sensors in bathrooms, solar hot water collectors, and solar photovoltaics covering 25% of electricity use.
low-flow showerheads, low-flow faucets for bathrooms and kitchen sinks, water-efficient urinals and dual flush for water closets.
Concrete filler slab for floor and roof construction, solid dense concrete blocks for external and internal walls, plasterboards on metal studs for internal walls, ceramic tile and vinyl flooring and and aluminum window frames.
*Part of the energy efficiency percentage may be associated with virtual energy for comfort depending on the presence of heating and cooling systems. Note that virtual energy does not contribute savings to utility bills.
