  • Green buildings are making a mark on Istanbul’s skyline. With the help of Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the consortium of thinkstep-SGS and CEDBIK, developers have started to certify their buildings with EDGE, challenging others in the market to embrace green.

EDGE in Turkey

EDGE is a green building certification system that empowers the Turkish real estate market to build sustainably. An innovation of IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, EDGE makes it faster, easier and more affordable than ever before to build and brand green. Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) and thinkstep-SGS are the providers of EDGE certification services in Turkey. They can certify a project to increase its marketability at the design stage.

Construction is an economic driver for Turkey. As new buildings are added to the current stock of 20 million, the country is simultaneously gearing up to renovate around six to seven million aging and at-risk buildings in the next 15 years. These extensive construction efforts present a window of opportunity for Turkey to promote green buildings for all.

EDGE certification provides a solution: to capitalize on the value of green buildings by promoting the benefits to customers while protecting the environment. With EDGE, it’s possible to stay at the forefront of the green building trend.

EDGE is an opportunity for governments, builders, banks and buyers, especially in Turkey.

Government

The Energy Efficiency Action Plan (2017-2023) promotes the use of efficient energy in public buildings and aims to mainstream green buildings throughout Turkey.

Builders

Every year around 100,000 new buildings are added to Turkey’s building stock, pushing builders to seek new ways to differentiate their projects and leverage their competitive brands.

Banks

The investment potential for green buildings is $19B in the near term, according to IFC’s Climate Investment Opportunities in Emerging Markets. IFC has invested $300M in green mortgages and green bonds through five commercial Turkish banks.

Buyers

High energy costs have left homebuyers searching for efficiency solutions, with green homes mainly available only at premium rates. EDGE facilitates access to green buildings for all.

Early adopters of EDGE are creating momentum, encouraging others to think twice before building conventionally.

Led by pioneers such as Aycan-Feres Joint Venture (the force behind Greenox) and Hun Gayrimenkul (Mint Caglayan and Mint E-5), green buildings will soon become the new standard in Turkey.

Certify your project in three easy steps with the EDGE App.

1. Register

Create your project, receive a quote, and send the required payment.

2. Submit

Upload compliance documentation and submit your project.

3. Certify

Win certification to better market your project to customers.

Understand the exact cost of certification in advance.

EDGE green building certification has two stages: design and construction. Each stage mirrors the other, except that a site audit is required at the construction stage. Upon completion of the design stage, a preliminary EDGE certificate is awarded, which enables marketability of your project with the EDGE brand. Upon completion of the construction stage, a final EDGE certificate is awarded. The cost of certification covers both stages. If your project is already built, only the construction stage of certification is required.

The first step towards certification is to create your project within the EDGE App. While it’s possible to calculate a rough estimate from the pricing chart, you may wish to receive a quote for a precise figure before entering your project within EDGE. You can also find a local EDGE Expert to help you to choose the most cost-effective green options.
