EDGE in Indonesia

EDGE is a green building certification system that empowers the Indonesian real estate market to build sustainably. An innovation of IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, EDGE makes it faster, easier and more affordable than ever before to build and brand green. The Green Building Council Indonesia is the exclusive provider of EDGE certification services in Indonesia, providing opportunities to increase the marketability of buildings at the design stage.

Indonesia has the fastest urban growth rate in Asia at more than four percent. Migration to cities  has led to a demand for more buildings in the country’s metropolitan areas. By 2030, approximately 71 percent of Indonesia’s population will live in cities. Green buildings can help Indonesian cities grow sustainably.

EDGE certification provides a solution: to capitalize on the value of green buildings by promoting the benefits to customers while protecting the environment. With EDGE, it’s possible to stay at the forefront of the green building trend.

EDGE is an opportunity for governments, builders, banks and buyers, especially in Indonesia.

Government

Indonesia plans to mitigate GHG emissions by 29 percent by 2030 and increase renewable energy to 23 percent of total primary energy supply by 2025.

Builders

By 2030, an estimated 13.5 million homes will be constructed in Indonesia’s cities to meet the growing need for more infrastructure in the rapidly urbanizing country.

Banks

The investment potential for green buildings is $23B in the near term, according to IFC’s Climate Investment Opportunities in Emerging Markets.

Buyers

High population density could leave many vulnerable. If Indonesia does not invest in sustainable infrastructure, residents may have to pay up to 15 percent of their incomes on energy alone.

Early adopters of EDGE are driving change, encouraging others to think twice before building conventionally.

Green buildings are emerging in the Indonesian market. With the help of the Green Building Council Indonesia, the government and developers are beginning to recognize the value of building green. The green building movement has been propelled by the passing of 13 separate pieces of legislation from 2012 to 2015 in support of climate investments for renewable energy and green buildings. IFC has assisted the Indonesian government in the establishment of green building codes with the use of incentives to encourage private sector uptake. Developers are also instrumental in harnessing the opportunity to build green. From Ciputra, which has partnered with the Indonesian government to provide green mortgages, to developers Diener Syz and Panorama Land, Indonesia’s future is beginning to look more green.

Certify your project in three easy steps with the EDGE App.

1. Register

Create your project, receive a quote, and send the required payment.

2. Submit

Upload compliance documentation and submit your project.

3. Certify

Win certification to better market your project to customers.

Understand the exact cost of certification in advance.

EDGE green building certification has two stages: design and construction. Each stage mirrors the other, except that a site audit is required at the construction stage. Upon completion of the design stage, a preliminary EDGE certificate is awarded, which enables marketability of your project with the EDGE brand. Upon completion of the construction stage, a final EDGE certificate is awarded. The cost of certification covers both stages. If your project is already built, only the construction stage of certification is required.

The first step towards certification is to create your project within the EDGE App. While it’s possible to calculate a rough estimate from the pricing chart, you may wish to receive a quote for a precise figure before entering your project within EDGE. You can also find a local EDGE Expert to help you to choose the most cost-effective green options.
